Carolina Women’s Physical Therapy begins “Mommy Rehab” pain management program for new and expectant mothers

May 24, 2016

Pregnancy is one of the biggest physical changes that a woman’s body can go through. Everything from hormonal changes to altered postures can cause pain. That’s why Carolina Women’s Physical Therapy and Wellness—Columbia’s only physical therapy practice devoted exclusively to women’s health–has created Mommy Rehab, a special treatment program for expectant mothers to help relieve pain before, during and after pregnancy.

Dawn 077b“Even before childbirth, pregnancy can take a great toll on a woman’s body, causing pain in the hips, lower back, ribs and neck in addition to sciatic nerve and pelvic pain. Aches are to be expected during this time but pain is not a normal part of pregnancy,” said Dr. Dawn Chambers (pictured), owner of Carolina Women’s Physical Therapy and Wellness. “With our practice devoted exclusively to women’s pain management, I designed Mommy Rehab as a special treatment course that specifically addresses pain management during pregnancy as well as helping women—post pregnancy—regain strength and muscle flexibility.”

Along with pain management, Mommy Rehab can also address other conditions associated with pregnancy including urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor dysfunctions. Typically lasting five to eight sessions, Dr. Chambers guides patients through a variety of treatment options that include functional activity modification, postural training, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release, stretching, customized strengthening techniques and home exercise programs. Mommy Rehab offers a gentle and safe program conducted in individual sessions at Carolina Women’s Physical Therapy and Wellness, located at 4015 Forest Drive, Suite 101, across from Muve Fitness.
