COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 15, 2015) – Have you ever visited or recognized a location where a movie was filmed? Tourism aficionado Dr. Simon Hudson, Endowed Chair for the SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina, will discuss the utilization of “destination placement” and more about film tourism at Science Café on Tuesday, October 20, 6-7:30 p.m., located at Speakeasy in Columbia, S.C.

Destinations both in the United States and around the world are working with the film industry to benefit from “destination placement,” which attracts tourists to a location by exposure through movies and television. This pop culture phenomenon is growing immensely, and Dr. Hudson will discuss why.

As an internationally recognized tourism expert and best-selling author, Dr. Hudson has traveled and taught in a number of countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Fiji, New Zealand, Spain, and Switzerland. In 2010, he became the Director and Endowed Chair of the The Richardson Family SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina.

Hudson is currently focusing his research on South Carolina’s $20 million tourism industry, specifically how tourism is a driver of economic development. His primary goal is to generate a one-stop resource of advanced information and intelligence for tourism industry stakeholders. All in all, he also hopes to improve South Carolina’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.

Science Café is hosted at 6:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of most months, featuring informal presentations by some of South Carolina’s top leaders in science and technology in a casual atmosphere.
