Pleasant Hill Middle shows ‘Cougar Pride’ with winning yearbook

October 14, 2017

Pleasant Hill Middle School’s Cougar Pride yearbook staff received accolades yet again from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association.

PHMS won All-State and the Palmetto Award for the 2016–2017 yearbook during the annual fall conference on October 3.

Yearbooks demonstrating excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism, including writing, graphic design and photography, can receive All-State. SCSPA gives the Palmetto Award to the best yearbook in each division, based on school enrollment.

“We are very pleased to achieve All-State distinction and win the Palmetto Award as it is very important to my staff that they create a book students love now and will love when they are older,” Yearbook Adviser René S. Horton said.

Members of the 2016–2017 Cougar Pride staff included S. Reagan Blackwell, Samantha L. Bucknam, Natalie N. Cousins, Camryn W. Hambrick, Izzy M. Jeffcoat, Morgan R. McManus and Abby M. Wright. Jeffcoat also won second place in sports photography for her photo of her brother and PHMS Student Zander K. Jeffcoat, a member of the Lexington High School cross-country team.

“Working on yearbook helped me grow academically and in life skills,” Jeffcoat said.

“Being a part of yearbook helped me step out of my comfort zone and learn how to interview strangers in a comfortable manner. In the future, I definitely see myself taking advantage of the skills I attained,” Hambrick added.
