Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rita Dove to kick off Governor’s School for the Arts’ new guest artist series

GREENVILLE, S.C.—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities has announced a new program that will bring world-renowned artists to Greenville for free public events and educational opportunities. This spring, the Governor’s School’s 2018 Presidential Guest Artist Series includes a reading by former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize recipient Rita Dove and an artist talk with avant-garde artist, composer, musician, and film director Laurie Anderson.
“Our goal with the Presidential Guest Artist Series is to provide educational, inspirational, and impactful arts experiences for our students, as well as students from Greenville County schools, and for the Upstate community,” said Dr. Cedric Adderley, Governor’s School for the Arts president. “We are excited about our first two artists and grateful for the financial support from The Graham Foundation and First Citizens Bank that has made this possible.”
Rita Dove: March 6 Reading at S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts
On Tuesday, March 6, Rita Dove will read from her latest release, Collected Poems: 1974-2004, and discuss her life’s work. Dove is the author of nine volumes of poetry and received the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1987. She served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 1993-1995 and Poet Laureate of Virginia from 2004-2006. Other honors include the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, Lifetime Achievement Medals from the Library of Virginia and the Fulbright Association, as well as 25 honorary doctorates, most recently from Yale University. In 1996, Dove received the National Humanities Medal from President Clinton, and in 2011 the National Medal of Arts from President Obama. Laurie Anderson: April 13 Reading at S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts
On Friday, April 13, Laurie Anderson will give an artist talk and read from her brand-new release, All the Things I Lost in the Flood. Anderson is best known for her multimedia presentations and innovative use of technology. As writer, director, visual artist and vocalist, she has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, and experimental music. Anderson has published seven books and her visual work has been presented in major museums around the world. In 2002, Anderson was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA. In 2015, her film, Heart of a Dog, was chosen as an official selection of the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. She is the recipient of the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, the Pratt Institute’s Honorary Legends Award, and Yoko Ono’s Courage Award for the Arts. Enrichment Experiences for Students Across Greenville
Both artists will spend two days in Greenville with itineraries that also include class time with Governor’s School for the Arts students and school-wide artist talks with visiting students from participating public schools in Greenville County. Students and schools that attend will receive copies of the artist’s work to take home or add to their library collections thanks to funding from The Graham Foundation.

The public is invited to attend the Rita Dove reading at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, and the Laurie Anderson artist talk at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13. Both events are free and will be held at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, located at 15 University Street, Greenville, SC, 29601. Tickets are not required.
