SouthCon Building Group wins Excellence in Construction Award for Columbia Central Station Fire House Project

November 28, 2018

Charleston, SC — SouthCon Building Group, a full-service general contractor based in Mount Pleasant, was recognized with the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) highest-level award at the ABC Carolinas Chapter’s 17th Annual Excellence in Construction (EIC) gala on November 15, 2018, in Charlotte, N.C. Taking home ABC’s coveted Eagle Award in the Historic Restoration-Renovation category, SouthCon was honored for its transformation of the Columbia Central Fire Station located on Senate Street in the Vista area of downtown Columbia, S.C. The architecturally distinctive Central Station Fire House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Having a unique architectural style and a history of distinctive community service, the Central Station Fire House – built in 1950 – has been “reborn” as a modern, mixed-use space for dining, entertainment and retail. SouthCon worked seamlessly with Columbia preservationists, architects and the developer to reclaim and restore the building’s historic fabric while integrating 21st-century design features and building code requirements.

“We take great pride in being recognized for our work, especially by our industry peers. Despite many obstacles related to the project’s downtown location and the inherent nature of historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects, our team was successful in overcoming a myriad of design, budget and schedule challenges,” said SouthCon Building Group’s President and CEO Chris Spach. “It was an honor to play a part in restoring one of Columbia’s most beloved buildings to its former glory.”

ABC Carolinas’ Annual EIC Awards competition is open to general contractors and specialty contractors in the two-state region. Having won at the Carolinas chapter level, SouthCon Building Group became eligible to compete in ABC’s National EIC Awards competition for which winners will be announced at the organization’s annual conference in Long Beach, California, in March 2019.
