Stevens & Wilkinson’s Director of Structural Engineering named South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers’ 2018 Engineer of the Year

June 22, 2018

Stevens & Wilkinson, a full-service architecture, engineering and interior design firm, announced today that Michelle Motchos, PE, LEED AP BD+C, senior associate and director of structural engineering, was named Engineer of the Year by the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers (SCSPE).

SCSPE’s Engineer of the Year is the highest award given to an individual by the society. The honor is given annually by SCSPE to an engineer who has made outstanding contributions to his or her profession, public welfare and mankind. The award was presented to Motchos at the 2018 South Carolina Engineering Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on June 12.

“Michelle is invaluable member of our team,” said Keith Branham, P.E., LEED AP, principal and director of engineering of Stevens & Wilkinson’s South Carolina office. “Her commitment and dedication to her career and the engineering profession truly sets her apart from her peers in the industry. She delivers excellence with every project, and her love for the Columbia community truly shows not only through her professional resume but also her extensive community involvement.”

At Stevens & Wilkinson, Motchos leads a variety of government, academic and civic projects. Most recently, she led the engineering efforts on the York County Government Center and the $32 million, 120,000-square foot Florence County Judicial Center, which officially opened earlier this year.

Additionally, Motchos mentors aspiring engineers in the firm’s intern program and is actively involved in the Columbia community through numerous charitable causes, including Mathcounts, a non-profit that provides engaging math programs to middle school students of all ability levels in order to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving. Motchos received both her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

“It is an honor to be selected for this award,” Motchos said. “I am humbled and deeply grateful to my mentors and peers who have supported me over the past two decades. As engineers, we strive to better the lives of the communities we serve. Professional societies like the National Society of Professional Engineers South Carolina play an important role in helping us achieve our goals, stay focused, develop relationships with our fellow engineers and encourage younger engineering professionals on similar paths. I am empowered by this award and look forward to continuing my service to the profession and community.”
