Columbia Taiwanese community celebrates Taiwanese American Heritage Month with Da-Guan Dance Theater performance

May 21, 2019

On Wednesday, renown art troupes, Da-Guan Dance Theater, will perform at Dreher High School to celebrate Taiwanese American Heritage Month. The event will begin at 7:00 pm. Free tickets are available.

Taiwanese American Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide in the month of May to honor the cultures, traditions, and achievements of Asian Pacific Islanders in the United States.

This year, to celebrate this festival, Taiwanese American Heritage Week, and to promote Taiwanese culture, the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) has invited our nation’s well-known art troupes “Da-Guan Dance Theater” to perform in America and Canada. Columbia is the capital city of South Carolina and also a sister City with Taichung, Taiwan.

The Department of Dance, National Taiwan University of Arts established the Da-Guan Dance Theater in 2005, by integrating artists from inside and outside the school, using multimedia, drama, music, and fine arts to actively present exquisite dance performances and create a new vision of dance arts.

This year, the Da-guan Dance Theater is missioned by the Overseas Community Affairs Council to hold the tour performance “2019 Taiwanese American Heritage Week and Asian Heritage Month in Canada”. The Theater will give delicate presentations, reaching a broader audience of Chinese dance arts, strengthening the international cultural exchanges, and enabling our performances to cross the gap between language, culture and ethnicity to integrate the essences of Eastern and Western cultures, leading the trend of Taiwanese dance arts to achieve the international professional level.

Furthermore, South Carolina signed a U.S.-Taiwan Bilateral Investment Agreement and a Free Trade Agreement. These were created for the purpose of enhancing the special sister-state bond between South Carolina and Taiwan. These agreements encourage further cultural, educational, and business exchanges between the citizens of both nations. We believe that the excellent dancing performance would be a wonderful opportunity to further introduce Taiwan to the mainstream society in South Carolina and to share more art/culture with our friends.

The public is invited to attend.
