Center hosts 75th Lunch and Learn event – June 21

Join USC Lancaster’s Native American Studies this month in celebration of its 75th presentation of the monthly Lunch and Learn lecture series.
At noon on Friday, June 21, Joe Timmons, III presents “A Walk Through Lancaster County Cemeteries and Graveyards,” discussing some of the funny, twisted, and scary stories of some of those buried in Lancaster County. He also will reveal hidden graveyards and cemeteries and will explain how to preserve graves and mark them through GPS.
Dr. Marty Richardson, citizen of the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, presented the March Lunch and Learn during Native American Studies Week at USC Lancaster’s Native American Studies Center. The Center will host its 75th Lunch and Learn program on Friday, June 21 at noon with a presentation of “A Walk Through Lancaster County Cemeteries and Graveyards,” by Joe Timmons, III. The monthly lecture series, which features topics on Native American and local history throughout the year, is free and open to the public.
The series began in 2013 after the Center’s Director of Archives, Brent Burgin, and a colleague presented a similar program as guest speakers at another museum. When Burgin suggested the idea to other Center faculty members, he was charged with coordinating the programs.
“When we opened the Center, we were trying to find ways to bring people in on a more consistent level, because a lot of people may visit a museum and not come back for another year,” said Burgin. “It was just a way to reach out to the community and it’s succeeded wildly beyond my expectations.”
The series typically features six Native American-themed topics throughout the year, with other talks covering local history, natural history, southern culture, and more. Guests are invited to bring a bag lunch to Lunch and Learn events, which typically take place for an hour on the third Friday of each month.
Three programs this year are sponsored by a generous donation from OceanaGold/ Haile Operation.
