I-85/385 gateway project detour and closure

June 18, 2019

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) continues to address the state’s infrastructure needs with our strategic 10-Year Plan. The plan is part of SCDOT’s significant effort to improve, resurface, and rebuild our state’s roads and highways. This includes the I-85/385 Gateway Project, which is part of our Interstate Improvement program. The project is intended to transform the intersection of Interstate 85 and 385 in Greenville County.

Starting Wednesday evening, drivers will need to prepare for a full closure of I-85 Southbound through the I-85/385 Gateway interchange beginning at 11 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m., weather permitting.

All vehicles will be detoured to the I-85 Southbound connector/distributor road through Exit 51B and on to I-385 Northbound. Drivers will then exit onto Roper Mountain Road via Exit 37 to enter onto I-385 Southbound and then to Exit 36B, which will take traffic back onto I-85 Southbound.

This closure is for the alignment shift and restriping to the inside on I-85 Southbound under the new I-385 bridge and for overhang/formwork removal from the new I-385 bridge.

The work being done on the I-85/385 Gateway Project will help alleviate traffic congestion throughout the entire corridor. Construction is set to continue until 2020.

As always, drivers are asked to use caution in the construction zone; obey speed limits and follow traffic signage.
