Young Leaders Society kicks off new year with “A Night for the Books” on August 16

August 5, 2019

Friday, August 16 | 7:00 p.m. | SC State Museum

United Way of the Midlands’ Young Leaders Society (YLS) is excited to announce its 2019-20 kickoff event, “A Night for the Books.” The event will benefit Be a Book Bunny, an initiative YLS and United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) program.

“A Night for the Books” is a black-tie optional event at the South Carolina State Museum that will feature an open bar and bites from Capital City Catering inspired by travel destinations from around the globe. Guests are encouraged to bring new, age-appropriate books for K-2nd graders that will be given to children in Be a Book Bunny totes; anyone who donates a book will be entered into a drawing that includes a $150 gift card to Hotel Trundle and a 3-month subscription to Audible. The event will also include a Wine Pull featuring various wines valued up to $60.

“Last year, ‘A Night for the Books’ was a huge success in raising funds and collecting books for the Be a Book Bunny program,” said YLS Chair Drew Schiavone. “It’s inspiring to see so many people come together for a wonderful evening dedicated to an important cause.”

In 2018, YLS’s Be a Book Bunny program provided tote bags of new, age-appropriate books and school supplies to 600 pre-K through second grade students at risk of falling behind in reading level and tutored through MRC. Thanks to the many donations at last year’s event, we were able to double the number of books in each tote.

“We are extremely grateful to YLS Signature Sponsor Columbia Metropolitan Airport, Plot Twist Sponsor Nephron Pharmaceuticals and Book Event Sponsor United Community Bank for making this event possible,” said YLS Kickoff Chair Erika Wasiak.
