17 Richland One schools ranked among Nation’s Healthiest Schools

Richland One is setting the pace as a national and state leader in creating healthy schools. Seventeen Richland One schools have been recognized by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as being among the healthiest schools in the nation. Of the 32 South Carolina schools earning the recognition this year, more than half are Richland One schools.

“We are thrilled to see another strong showing of dedicated schools that are taking steps to create healthier school environments that support children’s physical, social, and emotional health,” said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

To earn the rankings of National Healthy Schools, these schools improved their nutrition and physical activity programs to meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a national organization founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation.

Brockman Elementary, Crayton Middle, A.C. Flora High and Lower Richland high schools received the 2019 National Healthy Schools Silver Award for transforming their schools into healthier places.

Richland One’s 2019 Bronze Award winners are Brennen Elementary, Burton-Pack Elementary, Carver-Lyon Elementary, Forest Heights Elementary, Gadsden Elementary, Horrell Hill Elementary, Lewis Greenview Elementary, Meadowfield Elementary, Pine Grove Elementary, South Kilbourne Elementary, Webber Elementary, Heyward Gibbes Middle and the Olympia Learning Center.

In 2016, Brockman Elementary School won South Carolina’s first National Healthy Schools Gold Award. Richland One also has the distinction of having the state’s first silver elementary (2011), middle (2018) and high school (2017) award winners.
