Farm to Senior produce offering this week at Senior Resources’ Emergency Senior Nutrition Program and the Distribution Schedule for the upcoming week

April 20, 2020

Thanks to a generous donation from Vertical Roots, all senior citizens in Richland County, will receive a head of fresh lettuce this week when they pick up their 5 free meal packs at our Emergency Senior Nutrition Program drive-thru meal sites.  Vertical Roots operates a hydroponic farm on-site at the South Carolina State Farmers Market.  This donation came through Senior Resources participation in the Columbia SC Food Policy Committee.  This Farm to Senior special will only be held during the week of April 20 and is subject to running out at the end of this week’s distribution sites.

In the past four weeks Senior Resources has served over 41,500 meals to Richland County senior citizens through our Emergency Senior Nutrition Program.  Thanks to private donors from our community, our program will continue through Friday, May 15, with the possibility of further extending this critical nutrition service to our seniors through the end of May.  Any senior citizen (60+) or a caregiver picking up for a senior citizen in Richland County can pick up 5 free meals per week at a first-come, first-serve basis at one of our drive-thru distribution locations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Meal distribution will begin tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.  Please note that once all meals for that site have been distributed, the site will close for the day.  Each vehicle will be permitted to pick up two meal packs, which will include five meals per pack.

With our clients being at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis, we are committed to staying open at Senior Resources and providing local senior citizens the services they need.  In addition to our Emergency Senior Nutrition Program, we served over 10,520 frozen meals to our home-bound seniors through the Meals on Wheels delivery program.  If you are looking for ways to help our local senior citizens during this crisis, you can contribute a monetary donation to our COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund located on our website at:  https://seniorresourcesinc.salsalabs.org/covid-19relieffund/index.html or you can mail in a donation and mark it for the disaster relief fund.
