ASCE Infrastructure Report Card – SC grade

The American Society of Civil Engineers is responsible for the development of the Infrastructure Report Card, a rating of the nation’s infrastructure, which includes sixteen categories ranging from Bridges and Drinking Water to Schools and Public Parks. This report is developed with input from local ASCE Sections every four years.

With the release of the 2021 Report Card, South Carolina is shown to have scored a “C-“. This is in-line with the National grade of “C-” (an improvement from the national grade of D+ in 2017).

Key facts from the report include;

• 8.4% of the state’s 9,419 bridges are structurally deficient
• Public Parks have a “deferred maintenance” cost of $26,231,473
• 18% of roads are in a “poor” condition, costing motorists an average of $564 per year in maintenance and repairs

The report card also recommends three solutions to the infrastructure issues;

• Leadership and Action, including a clear vision for the nation’s infrastructure
• Investment, long-term and consistent
• Resilience, using new approaches, materials, and technologies to ensure ability to withstand and recover from hazards

Locally we are seeing long-awaited growth and development in Laurens County. While this investment translates to more jobs, higher standard of living, and many other positive things, it is important to understand the impact that this growth can have with regards to infrastructure demand and on our natural resources. In understanding the future impact, it is critical to recognize where we are in the current state.
