Commission of Public Works unveils improvements to Lake Bowen Park

Spartanburg Water and the Commission of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg are giving the public a firsthand look at improvements made to Lake Bowen Park. The utility held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, June 24, 2021, to unveil changes – all made with the safety and convenience of guests in mind.
Local and state leaders, including South Carolina State Senator Josh Kimbrell, City Councilwoman Ruth Littlejohn, and Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District Commissioner Jeff Horton, attended the ribbon cutting. Chairman John Montgomery and fellow members of the Commission, Angela Viney and Commission Vice Chairman Horace Littlejohn, cut the ribbon at the site of the new boat ramp.
This additional ramp is designated for motorized watercraft, while an existing boat ramp in the upper loop of the park has been assigned for the use of non-motorized watercraft.
Another key distinction of the improvement project is added parking for vehicles without boat trailers, as well as a designated parking area for vehicles with boat trailers.
The revamped parking and traffic flow is designed to provide a more secure environment for families.
“Our focus was, first and foremost, on safety and ensuring that whether visiting for a walk around the park, a morning of fishing, or a day on the lake, all of our park visitors can enjoy a safe experience,” said Montgomery.
A new ramp with special safety handrails will also make Lake Bowen Park more accessible.
“This project helps bring new life to this park and offers our community an enhanced experience for all visitors,” Montgomery said.
As part of the next phase of the project, strategic landscaping will be performed to better protect Lake Bowen from erosion and storm water runoff. This will prevent excess nutrients from entering our largest drinking water reservoir.
