Construction nonprofit Home Works receives grant from First Horizon Foundation

Home Works of America, a South Carolina based home repair nonprofit serving low income elderly homeowners in need, has received a grant from First Horizon Foundation. The Foundation is the philanthropic entity of First Horizon Corporation, which serves the Southeast and operates as Capital Bank Foundation in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia communities.

The $25,000 grant will fund Home Works’ repair efforts for four homes in its South Carolina footprint, providing improvements to each home’s health, safety and weatherization and improving daily life for homeowners in great need.

Home Works aims to repair the homes through the grant by the end of 2021 through its network of student and adult volunteers who will serve on scheduled work days across the state.

Home Works is grateful for First Horizon Foundation’s approach to improving communities and for their gift toward compassionate construction for vulnerable South Carolina neighbors.

Home Works is a 501(c)(3) with a mission to show God’s love through service to others by repairing the homes of elderly and disadvantaged homeowners, assisting youth in their development and empowering communities to care for their own members. Since 1996, more than 50,000 youth and adult volunteers have repaired more than 3,000 homes for elderly, disabled or veteran homeowners who qualify based on income/ownership guidelines.

A typical homeowner assisted by Home Works is a 76-year-old widow living annually on $12,000. Home Works oversees various repair projects addressing health and safety concerns. Repairs range from roof replacements to ramp construction, ceiling and floor repairs, painting, and other exterior trim and siding repairs.

Home Works creates a context in which youth and adults can volunteer and thus connect with poverty-stricken homeowners in a context of transformation, learning valuable new trade skills along the way.
