Wando volleyball earns national honor for fifth consecutive year
July 26, 2021Wando High School announced the volleyball program received the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-2021 season. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the honorees on Monday, July 19, 2021, which included 1,275 collegiate and high school teams.
The academic achievement award was created in 1992 to recognize teams that excel in the classroom. The award honors volleyball teams that maintain a yearlong grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale. The Warriors team finished the school year with a team GPA of 3.4850 (4.0 scale), making them eligible for the national honor, which they have now earned five years in a row.
Wando won the South Carolina High School League AAAAA state championship in November, and finished the season with a 20-1 record. Head coach Alexis Glover, who has been in charge of the program for 34 seasons and guided the Warriors to four state titles overall, applauded the teams’ achievements this year.
“These student-athletes took care of business in the classroom in order to achieve success on the court and in the future,” said Glover.

“Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players’ success both on and off the court.”
