Ladies of Distinction Tea to honor local trailblazers, award scholarships

The Iota Omicron Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., serving West Columbia and surrounding areas, will hold its Ladies of Distinction Tea: Centennial Edition on Sunday, June 26, at 2:30 p.m. This year’s event is virtual and in addition to commemorating sisterhood, scholarship and service, it will honor local citizens who exemplify commitment to their respective communities by way of serving others.

The 2022 Ladies of Distinction Tea Award will honor Trailblazers in Leadership and Service! This year’s awardees are Tameika Isaac Devine, esq., The Honorable J. Michelle Childs, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson and Chandra Cleveland.

“The work of each of these women in our community exemplifies and defines hope, vision, independence, innovation, selfless service, difference-maker, bridge-builder and perseverance – all characteristics of a trailblazer,” said Dr. Andrea M. Fleming, Basileus of the Iota Omicron Sigma Chapter. “This is our sorority’s centennial year and we have always lived by our motto Greater Service, Greater Progress. We are looking forward to recognizing these dynamic women for their dedication to leadership and service to others.”

This year, the Iota Omicron Sigma Chapter will also establish and award scholarships in the name of beloved Soror Mildred Weathers McDuffie who passed away this year. McDuffie was a member and staunch supporter of the chapter and a trailblazer in her own right in the Columbia community as an educator, council member, and summary court judge.
