Formosan subterranean termites confirmed in Aiken County
August 11, 2022Local entomologists recently announced the discovery of Formosan termites for the first time in Aiken County. While subterranean termites are common in the Palmetto State, the Formosan subterranean termite species, Coptotermes formosanus, is considered the most destructive, as they often have colonies ten times larger than other native subterranean termite species.
“Formosan termites can cause significantly more damage in a shorter amount of time than our native species,” said Terminix Technical Director and Board Certified Entomologist Kevin Hathorne. “For this reason, it’s important to have your home inspected by a trained and licensed termite professional that understands the biology and behavior of Formosan termites.”
Formosan termites were first recorded in the continental U.S. in the 1950s in Charleston, S.C., and are most commonly found in coastal regions. However, the species has spread into the Midlands and other areas over the past few decades.
“South Carolina has the ideal climate for termites, with consistently high temperatures and humidity,” said Hathorne. “The discovery of Formosan termites in Aiken County isn’t a reason to panic. However, it is important for homeowners to understand the risk and be sure their home’s termite protection plan covers damage from Formosan termites.”
