City of Charleston, JJR Development LLC announce creation of six new affordable homes under homeownership initiative

On Wednesday, November 2, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, Charleston’s Director of Housing & Community Development Geona Shaw Johnson, city Councilmember Robert Mitchell, Friendship Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Joshua Jaques Jr., and Chief Operating Officer of JJR Development LLC Sherry Brown announced the development of six new affordable homes on America Street at a groundbreaking ceremony.
Through a partnership with JJR Development LLC and the city’s Homeownership Initiative, the six new homes will be sold to future homeowners earning up to 120% of the area median income, and will remain affordable for 90 years.
The city of Charleston is financing the construction of these homes with $1.9 million in funding from affordable housing fees paid by for-profit development projects around the city.
The city of Charleston’s Homeownership Initiative was adopted in 2002, and was designed to create affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income families in specific neighborhoods. In the last 20 years, the program has produced over 130 affordable homes for first-time homebuyers.
