District 56 Educator is Recipient of Judy Redman Lifetime Service Award

If you know Eddie Marshall, you know his love for reading and children. Marshall has spent his entire career advocating for children and the importance of reading.

This past weekend while attending the Palmetto State Literacy Association conference, Marshall was presented the Judy Redman Lifetime Service Award from the esteemed literacy organization. The award is given to individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to literacy in the state of South Carolina.

Marshall has worked in Laurens 56 for approximately 20 years. His career began as a 5th grade teacher at his former elementary school, Joanna Woodson Elementary. After serving in this role for several years, he transitioned to an elementary Assistant Principal position and elementary Principal. It was in these leadership roles where Mr. Marshall’s love for literacy shined as he worked diligently to promote and instill a love for reading in all of this students.

Now in his role as Director of Elementary Education and Federal Programs, his passion for literacy still shines through. Marshall continues to be active in his local reading council. He can always be found reading to classes, dressing up as book characters, and arranging author visits for schools. In 2021, he was recognized as the SCASL Administrator of the Year!

“I am honored to receive this award especially since it is named after one of my mentors. Judy Redman wanted me to take a leadership role in the Palmetto State Literacy Association and supported me as I served as the State President and now as the association’s Executive Treasure,” said Marshall. “I strive to make her and my family proud of what I do. Literacy can take you places and I love to show and tell children and adults where it has taken me.”
