Garvin Design Group welcomes two summer interns
May 18, 2023Garvin Design Group recently welcomed two summer interns to the firm’s ranks. Clemson University School of Architecture undergraduate students Samantha Lowrie and Kevin Buell began summer internships in May. Both students are joining the firm for the first time this summer.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Samantha Lowrie graduated from Lexington High School in 2020 and will complete her undergraduate studies at Clemson University in May of 2024. In addition to her major in Architecture, Lowrie is earning a minor in Visual Arts. She served as a Visual Information Design Intern during her spring 2023 semester at Clemson and as a mentor for first-year Architecture students. Lowrie was nominated for the School of Architecture’s prestigious Rudolph E. Lee Award. Beyond her academic studies, Lowrie is a former employee and active volunteer with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia. She looks forward to gaining skills in current Architecture software and industry experience during her internship with Garvin Design Group. Lowrie plans to pursue a graduate degree and licensure following the completion of her undergraduate degree.
Hailing from New York, Kevin Buell also graduated from Lexington High School in 2020 and will complete his undergraduate degree in Architecture at Clemson University in May 2024 with a minor in Anthropology. Buell has been an intern in Clemson’s VR Mondi lab since August of 2022 and was part of the winning team in Clemson’s 2023 Design-a-thon. Buell’s team engineered plastic bottles to create irrigation systems for emergency relief in areas struggling with food and water scarcity. Buell’s interest in cultural anthropology – specifically, the impact of culture and a human-based perspective on architecture – informs his study. He hopes to further his research within his Anthropology minor to better understand how shape, color, and building form influence human perception, and how to leverage this knowledge in designing new spaces.
“We are thrilled to have Samantha and Kevin with us this summer,” said Scott Garvin, President of Garvin Design Group. “New faces give our firm new energy each summer and it’s a joy to be part of students’ first forays into the profession.”
