The 8th Annual “Running of the Football” A Time-Honored Tradition
August 28, 2023The 8th Annual “Running of the Football” proved to be a success, bringing rivalry schools together in sportsmanship.
This event, which precedes the clash between the Clinton Red Devils and the Laurens Raiders, has become a tradition. The history of the “Running of the Football” traces back to 2016 when Nickie Templeton, then Athletic Director of Clinton High School, envisioned a gesture that would symbolize the camaraderie between the neighboring towns and schools. Collaborating with Lee Atkinson, Cross Country Coach, the logistics of the event were worked out with Laurens.
The Clinton Cross Country Team left Wilder Stadium at 6:00 pm on Thursday with the game ball and ran it 5 miles to Clemson Eye. The Red Devils handed the ball off to the Raider Cross Country Team who carried the ball the remaining 5 miles to the square in Laurens.
“It’s a great tradition that brings the communities together to celebrate this rivalry and highlights the Cross Country athletes at the same time,” said Coach Atkinson.
Local law enforcement including Clinton Police, Laurens Police and the Laurens County Sheriff’s office played a role in run by providing escorts, ensuring the safety of the young participants.
Laurens Mayor Nathan Senn greeted both teams as they gathered on the Public Square in Laurens and this year at the suggestion of Coach Tommy Spires, the Athletic Director for Laurens District 55 there was a ceremonial handoff of the football to the referee during the pregame festivities.
