Richland Library hosts new art gallery exhibit

Artist Mary Gilkerson debuts Evening Light at Richland Library Main
Richland Library welcomes its newest art exhibition, Evening Light, by local artist Mary Gilkerson. Gilkerson’s exhibition launched on September 1 at Richland Library Main (1431 Assembly Street, 29201).
Drawing on her passions for landscapes and connection to communities, Evening Light is inspired by the intersections of nature and culture. Gilkerson considers herself an abstract-representational painter, aiming to evoke a memory in viewers. Her work takes inspiration from landscapes, mainly roads and highways, in and around Columbia, SC with a special focus on the Lower Richland community.
Gilkerson’s use of color and light to connect people to the experience of a place provides visitors with a unique viewing experience. Visitors to the gallery at Richland Library Main can slow down and take a step out of the fast pace of present society and take time to observe the world around them in the way people did before modern transportation and technology became prevalent.
A native South Carolinian, Gilkerson lived and worked in Columbia where she was a professor of art at Columbia College. She holds an MFA in drawing and painting from the University of South Carolina. Her work has earned grants from the S.C. Arts Commission and the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, in addition to being selected as a Southern Arts Federation Fellowship Finalist.
Evening Light will be on display from September 1- September 29.
