‘Live Like Grey’ golf tourney garners $10,000 for PTC scholarship

Family and friends remember Grey Hamlett for his gentle spirit and abundant love of life. They wanted to pay forward that spirit and joie de vivre by establishing a foundation and scholarship fund in memory of the 22-year-old Piedmont Technical College (PTC) welding graduate who passed away tragically last year in a motorcycle accident. This fall, the family – on behalf of the Live Like Grey Foundation – presented a $10,000 gift to support a special welding scholarship that carries Grey’s name at Piedmont Technical College.
The general scholarship represents proceeds from the LLG Foundation’s first annual fundraising tournament, held July 15 in Greenwood at The Links at Stoney Point. Grey’s mother, Cindy Hamlett-Dorsey, estimated that about 200 people participated in the event, which included 24 teams of four people each and a fundraising raffle of donated items.
“We actually had to turn away people after all the teams were full,” she said. “We were really pleased. It was a great event.”
The Grey Hamlett Welding Scholarship at PTC is a $500 grant available to students in the college’s Welding Program. Hamlett-Dorsey says the LLG Foundation would like to make the Live Like Grey Golf Tournament an annual event and may shift its scheduling to the cooler fall months in the future.
“The main thing that stood out to me was that several people made the comment that they were surprised that Grey had so many connections,” she added. “We had people from all over call us wanting to help. We are not sure what their connections were to Grey, but they each had a connection.”
