Celebrating Native American Traditions Continues

Once again all eyes will be on the artists preserving the skills, art, and traditions of their ancestors at the second day of “Celebrating Native American Traditions Past and Present” on Saturday, October 28. The Magnolia Room at the Laurens County Museum will be the venue for the programs sponsored by the Laurens County Museum and the PAIA Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation of South Carolina. A generous grant from the SC Arts Commission Office of Folklife and Traditional Arts made the series of programs possible.

At 10:00 am, October 28, witness the beautiful and mesmerizing flute playing of Kim Two Moons Elwood, Cherokee flute player.  She will demonstrate other instruments, the hand drum and rattlers, as well as demonstrate how flutes are made. Two programs will begin at 1:30 pm.  A talk on Cherokee basketry by Deborah Moon Wolf Pope will be followed by a workshop where participants will make a tobacco basket. At the same time, Patsy Dancing Wolf Durham will talk about dream catchers and then lead a worship on making a dream catcher.

“Celebrating Native American Traditions Past and Present” will continue on Saturday, March 16, 2024, with more artistry and workshops. Laurens County school children will have the opportunity for field trips to the PAIA Tribal grounds in Gray Court on two Wednesdays in March.
