South Carolina Bans ‘Carolina Squat’ Cars
November 15, 2023Effective November 12th, the “Carolina Squat” is officially prohibited on South Carolina roads. The legislation characterizes this phenomenon as a vehicle with either the front or rear fender raised four or more inches higher than the opposite end.
South Carolina law enforcement will commence issuing warning citations. However, effective May 10, 2024, drivers caught violating this regulation will be subject to fines.
The penalties for each subsequent offense are detailed as follows:
- First offense: $100 fine
- Second offense: $200 fine
- Third offense: $300 fine and a 12-month license suspension by the Department of Motor Vehicles, starting from the date of conviction.
It’s important to note that an offense is considered subsequent only if it occurs within five years of the prior violation. The bill, signed by Governor Henry McMaster on May 16, is now in effect, as reported by the South Carolina Statehouse.
