State Treasurer Curtis Loftis thanks Charleston County Treasurer Mary Tinkler for her support returning unclaimed property

November 21, 2023

State Treasurer Curtis Loftis extended his appreciation to Charleston County Treasurer Mary Tinkler for her continued efforts to return unclaimed property to Lowcountry citizens.

“Treasurer Tinkler has been a valued partner in helping my office return hundreds of thousands of dollars in unclaimed property to its rightful owners,” Treasurer Loftis explained. “Whether it’s co-hosting public events to search people’s names or using her contacts to find Charleston County residents, businesses or organizations that are due funds, I am grateful for her leadership and support.”

With over $850 million in unclaimed property, it’s estimated that one in seven South Carolinians have missing money waiting for them at the State Treasurer’s Office. There’s more than $88 million in Charleston County and almost $200 million in the Lowcountry.

“Many times, we have a hard time convincing people, like a recent Charleston County resident who had more than $200,000, that these funds exist and actually belong to them,” Treasurer Loftis said. “That’s when I call in the local reinforcements, like Treasurer Tinkler, with connections to these people to reassure them this is not a scam and assist them through the claims process.”

“I am always happy to help taxpayers recover any funds due to them, so it is my pleasure to assist Treasurer Loftis in these endeavors,” added Treasurer Tinkler.

Millions of dollars are transferred to the Unclaimed Property Program annually by companies that cannot locate the owners. Examples include forgotten utility deposits, closed bank accounts, uncashed checks or insurance proceeds. To see if you have funds, please visit the State Treasurer’s website at treasurer.sc.gov to search for and claim your money.
