Cheryl Harris installed as SCSBA Region 8 Director

Cheryl Harris, chairperson of the Richland School District One (Richland One) board of commissioners, was installed as Region 8 (Richland County) director of the South Carolina School Board Association’s (SCSBA) board during Delegate Assembly, SCSBA’s annual business meeting. The gathering was held Saturday, Dec. 2, in Charleston.

Harris joins seven others elected to the SCSBA board by delegates hailing from the state’s 73 school boards.

The others include:

  • President, Michele Branning, Fort Mill School District
  • President-elect, Charles Govan, Darlington County School District
  • Secretary/Treasurer, Tim Rhodes, Abbeville County School District
  • Region 2 Director, Darlene Roberson, Charleston County School District
  • Region 3 Director, Kathy Anderson, Georgetown County School District
  • Region 7 Director, Gary Porth, Calhoun County School District
  • Region 15 Director, Glenda Morrison-Fair, Greenville County School District

In addition to the election of association officers, delegates adopted resolutions to guide the association during the 2024 legislative session.

Harris has served on her local board for 11 years and has achieved Level 6 distinction in SCSBA’s Boardmanship Institute, the highest level of recognition awarded by the Association. She is also past president of the S.C. Caucus of Black School Board Members.

She has more than 22 years of human resource experience, having worked for various businesses as a Human Resource Generalist specialist.

She is a graduate of Richland One where she volunteered for more than 13 years before being elected to serve on the board. Harris represents District 4, extending from the Sumter County line into the City of Columbia and includes all Lower Richland communities and the Olympia area.

Harris is a member of several civic and religious organizations and associations, including her service as a member of Refuge Temple Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Columbia where she serves in the music ministry and as part of the Ministers’ and Deacons’ Wives Guild.

Harris has a master’s degree in business administration from South University.

She and her husband Robert Harris have four children – Megan (Efosa), Chandel, Evani and Robert Jordan – and two grandsons.
