AT&T and Communities In Schools of South Carolina Bridge digital divide with laptop distribution for Fairfield County Students
January 26, 2024Fairfield County students and families benefited from the ongoing collaboration between Communities In Schools of South Carolina (CISSC), AT&T, and Human I-T. The partners provided free refurbished laptops in a distribution event held at Fairfield Central High School. The initiative aims to address the digital divide prevalent among K-12 students, where approximately 974 students lack access to the internet, computers, and essential digital skills.
This event, part of AT&T’s Connected Learning initiative, marked a significant step in overcoming digital disparities through efforts focused on internet accessibility, affordability, and safe adoption. One hundred students and families in Fairfield received laptops as part of the ongoing commitment. Amanda Taylor, Regional Manager of External Affairs at AT&T South Carolina, expressed, “At AT&T, we are committed to helping close the digital divide and are proud to support Communities In Schools of South Carolina, providing Fairfield County students and families with the technology and resources they need to thrive.”
Dr. J.R. Green, Superintendent of Fairfield County School District, emphasized the role of both schools and communities in shaping young people’s trajectories. “Communities In Schools has been a vital partner in our effort to maximize potential in our young people,” noted Dr. Green. Jamie Cooper, President & CEO of CISSC, highlighted the impact on digital literacy, stating, “AT&T’s contribution ensures that students in Fairfield County have the technology they need to thrive academically and prepare for a technology-driven future.”
Elected officials, Representative Annie McDaniel of District 41 and Senator Mike Fanning of District 17, commended the collaboration. Representative McDaniel stressed the importance of education, stating, “Fairfield County students deserve access to tools that will prepare them for the future.” Senator Fanning, with years of experience in education, recognized the significance of comprehensive support for students, creating an environment where they feel supported, connected, and ready to embrace the opportunities of the digital world.
The laptop distribution event exemplifies the commitment of these organizations in making a lasting difference in the lives of students, empowering them with the resources needed to thrive now and in the future.
