Charleston Day in Columbia: Leaders forge strong connections with legislators at successful inaugural event

The City of Charleston proudly announces the success of its inaugural “Charleston Day in Columbia,” a pivotal event fostering important connections with legislators statewide. Spearheaded by Mayor William S. Cogswell, the day emphasized cultivating relationships with delegations across South Carolina. This marked the first time a mayor of Charleston organized and hosted an event in Columbia with city and county council, inviting every member of the General Assembly to break bread and establish relationships for future collaboration.

Mayor Cogswell was joined by City Councilmembers Keith Waring, Jim McBride, Mike Seekings, Boyd Gregg, Kevin Shealy, Karl Brady, County Councilmembers Joe Boykin, and Jenny Honeycutt. The group, along with key city staff, kicked off the morning with introductions on the balcony of the House of Representatives chambers. Thanks to a partnership with Explore Charleston, Mayor Cogswell and the group were welcomed at the annual Hospitality Day at the Capitol; a yearly tradition attended by most of the state legislature.

That evening, Charleston’s hospitality was on display as Mayor Cogswell hosted a reception for all statehouse elected officials. The bipartisan event was met with great enthusiasm and attendance.

Mayor Cogswell emphasized the significance of the trip, stating, “Charleston Day in Columbia signifies more than an event; it showcases our city’s commitment to building meaningful relationships across the state and amplifying our city’s voice on the statewide stage.”

Mayor Cogswell noted his intention for Charleston Day in Columbia to be an annual spring trip, aiming to establish a tradition of Charleston hospitality at the statehouse. Additional photos available upon request.
