American Legion Post 25 to Celebrate Grand Opening of Picnic Pavilion

American Legion Post 25, chartered in Laurens in 1919, is marking a significant milestone with the grand opening of their new picnic pavilion. The event, set for 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 28th, invites the public to join in the celebration and enjoy a roast of a 300-pound pig.
Post 25 has a storied history, mirroring the ebb and flow of many organizations. Over the years, the post experienced periods of both growth and decline. However, a resurgence began about eighteen years ago when then Commander Bill Coggins and Adjutant John Britt set out to rebuild the post. Since then, leadership has changed hands several times, yet the spirit of the organization has endured. From a modest group of about a dozen members, Post 25 has grown to a robust membership of over 170 members.
Fifteen years ago, inspired by new member Kevin Farnsworth and Past Commander Jim Peterson, the post set an ambitious goal to create a new home for Post 25. This vision came to fruition in March 2024 when the ground was broken for the new picnic pavilion at 19 Choctaw Street, Laurens.
The project, largely driven by the skilled tradesmen within the Post 25 membership and a host of willing volunteers, was a collaborative effort. The team worked hard to construct a beautiful pavilion that is set to revitalize the old Watts Mill community.
Current Post Commander Kevin Farnsworth reflects on the journey, saying, “This has truly been a project made possible by community spirit and community contributions in the form of time, materials, and skilled experience.”
The new pavilion is not just a testament to the determination and community spirit of Post 25; it also represents a new chapter for the post and the broader community. The pavilion will host Post activities, community gatherings, and private events, serving as a versatile venue for various functions.
