Advanced robotic surgery system arrives at Roper St. Francis Healthcare

July 30, 2024

Roper St. Francis Healthcare recently became the first Charleston healthcare provider to acquire and implement a new surgical robot called the Da Vinci 5.

This cutting-edge device will enhance our offerings for bariatric surgery with improved accuracy and precision in surgery, which can mean smaller incisions, less pain and even faster healing times for patients.

Dr. Kenneth Mitchell, Bariatric Surgeon said Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s commitment to providing the most up-to-date technology will benefit patients.

“There is an emphasis on vision. There’s an emphasis on precision,” Dr. Mitchell said of the system’s advanced capabilities. “Being able to feel things with the instruments on the inside … will not only allow us to continue to provide excellent healthcare for our patients in our community but also improve the quality that we deliver.”

Roper Hospital also was the first in South Carolina to have a da Vinci robot in 2007, and Roper St. Francis Healthcare has led the region in robotic surgeries. Leaders have been deliberate since 2017 in planning to expand robotic surgery across all hospitals.
