Commemorating Bravery: 244th Anniversary Celebration of Patriot Victory at Musgrove’s Mill
July 31, 2024The 244th Anniversary Celebration of the Patriot Victory at Musgrove’s Mill is set to take place on Saturday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Musgrove Mill State Park. This event, sponsored by the General James Williams Chapter of the South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, is a recognized state event.
The celebration commemorates the daring and decisive actions of Patriot commanders Colonel James Williams of the Ninety Six District, Colonel Elijah Clark of Georgia, and Colonel Isaac Shelby of what is now Eastern Tennessee. These leaders, along with 200 mounted riflemen, rode all night from the Broad River to attack 200 Loyalists camped at Musgrove’s Mill. Upon learning that 300 British Provincial soldiers had joined the Loyalists, the weary Patriots, undeterred, resolved to fight it out.
The event will offer attendees an opportunity to delve into the history of this pivotal battle. Visitors will learn how the determined Patriots achieved a stunning victory, which led to Colonel Williams being promoted to Brigadier General. This triumph was especially significant as it followed the disastrous defeat of the Southern Continental Army by the British at Camden, underscoring the fighting spirit and capability of the Patriots in their quest for independence from England.
Join the celebration at Musgrove Mill State Park to honor the bravery and resilience of those who fought for American independence.
