Laurens County Prepares for National Poll Worker Recruitment Day on August 1, 2024

July 31, 2024

National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), is set to take place on August 1, 2024. This National Day of Action is designed to inspire civic engagement and encourage individuals to sign up as poll workers, ensuring the smooth and fair conduct of elections across the country.

As the November 5 general election approaches, the need for poll workers remains critical. Laurens County, in particular, requires over 200 poll workers to meet the demands of Election Day. Those interested in serving can request an application by calling 864-984-4431 or visiting here.

In Laurens County, election officials are diligently preparing for the upcoming general election. Lynne West, Director of Elections, emphasized the importance of poll workers, stating, “We can’t do it alone. Poll managers are crucial to conducting free and fair elections.”

Poll Manager Qualifications

  • Poll Managers, excluding Poll Manager Assistants, must be registered to vote in South Carolina.
  • Individuals aged 16 or 17 can apply to be a Poll Manager Assistant.
  • Clerks must be registered voters in the county they are serving or an adjoining county.
  • Poll Managers cannot be candidates or the spouse, parent, child, sibling, or spouse of a sibling of a candidate at any polling place where the candidate’s name appears on the ballot.

Poll managers undergo thorough training before every election. “The training is intense, but we have a lot of fun too,” West added. August 1 also marks Poll Managers Appreciation Day, recognizing the vital role these individuals play in the electoral process. Paid positions for poll managers are still available, offering an opportunity for community members to contribute to the democratic process while earning compensation.

National Poll Worker Recruitment Day serves as a reminder of the essential role poll workers play in upholding the integrity of elections. By stepping up to serve, community members can help ensure that the November 5 election runs smoothly and fairly.
