Richland Library Friends and Foundation Welcomes Two New Fellows

The Richland Library Friends and Foundation is excited to announce Alejandro Jaramillo of Furman University and Amanda Lockett of the University of South Carolina as the recipients of the 2024 Ethel Bolden Minority Fellowship. The Ethel Bolden Minority Fellows will receive 3,500 in financial assistance towards continuing their education. The fellowship encourages and provides support to students from underserved and underrepresented ethnic and racial groups who are working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Jaramillo attends Furman University where he is working to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (2025). Driven by his desire to contribute to the enhancement of library services and the empowerment of the diverse communities they serve, he aims to use storytelling to create connections, preserve cultural heritage, and foster a sense of community among library patrons.

Lockett attends the University of South Carolina where she is pursuing a PhD in Library and Information Science. She believes that libraries are essential public spaces granting communities access to knowledge and resources. Lockett is a cultural preservationist with unique experiences preserving artifacts, stories, and records within Gullah Geechee communities. Lockett will use her skills and experience to assist Richland Library customers in capturing and archiving their personal experiences and oral histories through storytelling.

Originally established in 2010 as a scholarship, the fellowship recognizes Mrs. Ethel Bolden’s years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries.
