August 7, 2024The Mayor’s Youth Council is designed to bring together a diverse group of students who are passionate about various aspects of community life, including the arts, athletics, academics, public service, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. As members of the council, students will have the unique opportunity to represent their peers, collaborate on meaningful projects, and work closely with Mayor Senn and other city leaders to address issues that are important to the youth of Laurens.
“Engaging our youth in local government and community projects is vital for the growth and future of Laurens,” said Mayor Nathan Senn. “The Mayor’s Youth Council will not only give our young people a voice but also foster a sense of responsibility and leadership that will benefit our community for years to come.”
The council will consist of seven councilors, each representing a specific area of interest:
- Arts
- Youth Athletics/Activities
- Young Scholars
- Future Public Servants
- Community Service
- Environmental Interests
- Minority Youth
Teachers and advisors will nominate students based on their interests and involvement in these areas, with a special emphasis on ensuring a broad cross-section of the community is represented. The Mayor will appoint council members, ensuring diverse representation across Laurens’ youth.
“This is an exciting opportunity for high school students to make a real impact on our community,” Mayor Senn added. “I encourage all eligible students to get involved and help shape the future of Laurens.”
