Walmart Recalls Apple Juice in South Carolina and 24 Other States Due to Elevated Arsenic Levels

August 26, 2024

Walmart is recalling over 9,500 cases of “Great Value” brand apple juice due to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic, as announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected products were manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc. and distributed across 25 states, including South Carolina.

The recall concerns 8-ounce apple juice bottles sold in six-packs, with a UPC of 0-78742-29655-5 and a “best if used by” date of December 28, 2024. The recall, initiated on August 15, 2024, was classified as a “Class II” recall by the FDA on August 23. This classification indicates that while the product poses potential health risks, the likelihood of severe adverse effects is considered remote.

The apple juices in question were found to contain arsenic levels of 13.2 parts per billion, exceeding the FDA’s recommended limit of 10 parts per billion for inorganic arsenic in apple juice. This threshold was established in June 2023 to protect consumers from the harmful effects of arsenic, a naturally occurring toxic mineral.

Exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic is particularly concerning for young children, as it is associated with adverse neurological effects, including learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, and reduced IQ. In adults, long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic has been linked to skin disorders, increased risks of certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease.

Consumers in South Carolina and other affected states are advised to check their purchased apple juice products and avoid consumption if they match the recalled lot. The FDA’s recall serves as a precautionary measure to mitigate any potential health risks associated with the contaminated juice.
