September 17, 2024Dorchester County Council announced that it has unanimously approved the county’s request to become an affiliate member of the South Carolina Land Trust Network. This partnership will further Dorchester County’s commitment to preserving greenspace, enhancing recreational opportunities, and promoting a high quality of life for its residents and visitors.
Dorchester County’s affiliation with the South Carolina Land Trust Network will allow county staff to collaborate with land trust experts across the state, share best practices, and explore opportunities for land conservation. This move strengthens the county’s dedication to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
Vice Chairman David Chinnis of Dorchester County Council expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “Dorchester County’s decision to join the South Carolina Land Trust Network reinforces our commitment to preserving the natural beauty and recreational resources that make our community special. This affiliation allows us to work hand-in-hand with experts and peers across the state, ensuring that we protect and enhance our greenspace for future generations.”
Jennifer Howard, Executive Director of the South Carolina Land Trust Network, echoed this sentiment, noting, “While Dorchester County is not the first member, the county is certainly one of the first and a vocal advocate for maintaining quality of life and promoting recreational opportunities for its residents and visitors. We’re thrilled to have Dorchester County on board as an affiliate member and believe their leadership will inspire other counties to explore similar land use opportunities.”
Councilman Chinnis also played a key role in advancing the Network’s goals by securing a place for the South Carolina Land Trust Network on the agenda for the South Carolina Association of Counties Annual Meeting. The Land Trust Network hopes that Dorchester County’s leadership will serve as a model for other counties interested in preserving land and exploring innovative land use strategies.
