September 18, 2024

The City of Laurens Mayor Nathan Senn has announced the first group of young leaders selected to serve on the inaugural Mayor’s Youth Council for the 2024-2025 term. This initiative is aimed at empowering high school students by engaging them in community leadership and providing them with a platform to influence local decisions.

The first class of the Mayor’s Youth Council includes the following students:

  • Margaret Collins
  • Mary Babb Davis
  • Dillon Eclavea
  • Ellie Raedell Jones
  • Ethan Lanham
  • Omariye Thompson
  • Janiya Williams

These seven councilors represent a diverse range of interests, including the arts, athletics, academics, public service, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Each student was nominated by teachers and advisors based on their involvement in these areas, ensuring that the council reflects a broad cross-section of the Laurens community.

Mayor Senn expressed his excitement for the newly formed council, stating, “Engaging our youth in local government and community projects is vital for the growth and future of Laurens. The Mayor’s Youth Council will not only give our young people a voice but also foster a sense of responsibility and leadership that will benefit our community for years to come.”

The Mayor’s Youth Council is designed to allow students to represent their peers, collaborate on meaningful projects, and work closely with Mayor Senn and other city leaders to address issues important to the youth of Laurens. Through this initiative, students will have the unique opportunity to influence the future of the city while developing their own leadership skills.

Members of the newly appointed Mayor’s Youth Council were recognized at the start of the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

As the council embarks on its first year, the selected students will be involved in various projects, discussions, and events that impact the Laurens community. Mayor Senn encourages the youth of Laurens to take pride in their community and stay engaged, noting, “This is an exciting opportunity for high school students to make a real impact on our community. I encourage all eligible students to get involved and help shape the future of Laurens.”

The Mayor’s Youth Council is part of a broader effort by the City of Laurens to engage the next generation of leaders and ensure their voices are heard as the city continues to grow and evolve.
