Charleston’s philanthropic tradition faces unprecedented challenges amid national decline in charitable giving

September 26, 2024

Charleston’s long-standing tradition of philanthropy is facing unprecedented challenges, as the number of people and the total dollars that support nonprofits nationwide has reached a historic low, according to a recent report by the Generosity Commission. This crisis emerges as demand for nonprofit services continues to rise, particularly as government programs reduce their support, placing additional strain on organizations that serve vulnerable populations.

“The Generosity Commission’s report highlights that the percentage of Americans contributing to charities has dwindled to an all-time low,” said Jim Bush, CEO of Winkler Group and a board member of the Giving Institute that commissioned the report. “This shift undermines the community-driven support that has long been a cornerstone of Charleston’s philanthropic landscape.”

Nonprofits play an essential role in the Charleston community, offering critical services such as shelter, food, and education that bridge gaps left by reduced government assistance. Hospitals and healthcare organizations heal us when we’re sick. Cultural organizations preserve our history and celebrate our culture. With the decline in charitable giving at every gift level and a similar decline in the number of people who volunteer, there is growing concern about the ability of these organizations to sustain their vital work.

“While large donations often make headlines, it’s the contributions from everyday givers that form the backbone of nonprofit support,” said Bush. “Their involvement is crucial for maintaining the strong community connections that have always fostered Charleston’s philanthropic spirit. Now, more than ever, we need to come together to support the causes that matter to us.  We cannot let our community down.”

The Winkler Group, a national fundraising firm headquartered in Charleston, has spent two decades helping nonprofits nationwide raise funds to expand their missions. The firm has seen first-hand how important it is that we all make financial contributions, volunteer, and offering expertise as board members.

“No matter the size, every effort plays a significant role in sustaining the nonprofits that make Charleston a compassionate and thriving community,” said Bush.
