Saturday Evening Update: Laurens Electric Power Restoration Efforts Continue Amid Catastrophic Damage

As of Saturday evening, 70% of Laurens Electric’s members remain without power, down from a peak of 98%. Due to the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Helene, there is still no estimated time for full restoration. Many members may be without power well into next week, and we advise making contingency plans as we understand the challenges this will cause.

Our full workforce, including contractors, is working across the service area, with mutual aid crews from Florida and Ohio assisting. Additional crews from Arkansas are expected later tonight, and 100 more personnel will arrive in the coming days.

Currently, 11 of 32 substations have been brought back online. The focus now shifts to addressing hazardous conditions like broken poles and downed lines in order to restore power to homes. We are working closely with Duke Energy to resolve transmission line damage affecting the remaining substations.

Accessibility continues to be a significant issue, with crews cutting through countless fallen trees and debris to reach substations and critical infrastructure. Roadways are also obstructed by downed trees, slowing progress.

Given the extent of the damage, much of our infrastructure will need to be rebuilt rather than simply restored. The number of broken poles is now at 200 and still climbing.
