Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands names new Chief Executive Officer

October 16, 2024

After an extensive and thoughtful process in partnership with Find Great People, Girl Scouts of South Carolina—Mountains to Midlands announced the selection of Melanie Huggins to be its next Chief Executive Officer.

Melanie is currently the Executive Director of Richland Library in Columbia, SC, which has been designated as a State of South Carolina “Top Place to Work.”  Melanie’s work in libraries began in children’s and youth services, and she is excited to create more impactful experiences for girls and young women in a state that she cares about deeply.

Throughout her 30-year career in public libraries, Melanie has been widely recognized for leading with an equity and social justice focus, improving customer experiences, and designing impactful spaces. She is a transformational leader, led by her commitment to make communities more livable, resilient, and inclusive.

Melanie’s commitment to children and her drive for equity make her an obvious choice for GSSC-MM. “I’m excited to explore all that is possible when we bring girls together, giving them the opportunities and tools they need to change the world. As chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of South Carolina—Mountains to Midlands, I am eager to get to know the talented staff, increase our impact, expand our membership, and strengthen the leaders of tomorrow,” says Melanie.

Girls need Girl Scouting now more than ever, and we are confident Melanie is the right person to help ensure all girls in our council area have access to Girl Scouting and can bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world.

Melanie will begin as CEO for Girl Scouts of South Carolina—Mountains to Midlands on January 6, 2025.

Current GSSC-MM CEO Lora Tucker announced in May that she would retire on October 31, 2024. Chief Operations Officer Lynn Arve has been appointed as interim CEO.

Girl Scouts of South Carolina—Mountains to Midlands serves more than 8,000 girls and volunteers in 22 counties in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina.
