The Nick presents ReelTalk: Docuseries featuring Sugarcane, a powerful tribute to Native resilience

On October 29, The Nickelodeon Theater presents the next installment of its ReelTalk: Docuseries, featuring Sugarcane, an extraordinary documentary by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. This event will include a post-screening discussion with special guests, offering a profound exploration of Native resilience and intergenerational healing.

Sugarcane tells the deeply moving story of a community reckoning with the legacy of Indian residential schools in Canada, where evidence of unmarked graves was discovered in 2021. The film sheds light on the forced separation, assimilation, and abuse Indigenous children faced in these schools, and the ongoing impact on their communities. Amidst this historical trauma, Sugarcane beautifully highlights a community’s strength in overcoming intergenerational pain and reclaiming their cultural heritage.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring prominent leaders in Native American communities:

• Tammy Stevens, Vice Chief of the Sumter Tribe of Cheraw Indians
• Dana Muckelvaney, Councilwoman for the Edisto Natchez Kusso Tribe
• Stephen Criswell, Director of the Native American Studies Center at USC Lancaster
• Chief Lamar Nelson

The South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs has been instrumental in helping us identify participants relevant to the community for this event. We are also excited to partner with them for a Native American Heritage Month film series in November, furthering our commitment to celebrating and amplifying Indigenous voices.

These esteemed participants will provide unique insights into the film’s themes, exploring the ongoing journey of healing and the resilience of Indigenous people.
