GADC announces retirement of Senior Project Manager Tony Smith
November 7, 2024The Greenville Area Development Corporation (GADC) announces the retirement of Senior Project Manager Tony Smith after more than 16 years of service. Smith, who joined GADC in 2008, has been a key leader in advancing Greenville County’s economic development efforts, helping to attract and grow numerous industries in the region.
With more than 25 years of experience in the economic development profession, Smith’s expertise in site selection, incentive negotiation, industrial site development, and strategic planning has directly contributed to over $2.6 billion in capital investment and the creation of more than 11,300 jobs. His work spans industries such as automotive, advanced materials, aerospace, bioscience, and life sciences, where he has served as GADC’s lead recruiter.
“Tony’s leadership and dedication have made an enormous impact on our organization and the businesses we serve,” said Marshall Franklin, Chair of the GADC Board of Directors. “His vast experience, attention to detail, and commitment to fostering economic growth have helped solidify Greenville County as a leading destination for business investment. We are grateful for his years of service and wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement.”
Throughout his tenure, Smith also advised GADC’s team on financing strategies for capital-seeking clients, maintaining vital relationships with industry partners and financial institutions. He has worked closely with local and state officials, private sector partners, and other key stakeholders, ensuring that Greenville County remains a competitive destination for business investment.
In addition to his role at GADC, Smith has served on the board of Provident Business Financial Service and is an active member of the SC Economic Developers Association. As well as being a certified South Carolina Economic Developer, Smith holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Reflecting on his time with GADC, Smith said, “It has been a privilege to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team. Together, we’ve helped shape Greenville into the vibrant and growing community it is today. I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished and am excited to see what the future holds for GADC and Greenville County.”
