New Dual-Concept Restaurant Brings Southern Elegance and Art Deco Flair to Downtown Laurens
December 1, 2024Downtown Laurens is set to welcome a new culinary and social hotspot with the opening of Moultrie Southern Cuisine + Spirits and The Fox Hole Bar + Lounge at 101 E Laurens St. This two-story establishment, slated to open in Spring 2025, promises a blend of elevated Southern dining and an intimate Art Deco-inspired speakeasy experience.
Inspiration Behind the Concept
The unique dual-concept restaurant was envisioned by Matthew Perkins, Jeffrey Ponder, and Sidney Perkins of Soko LLC. Partnering with Freedom Commercial and Holmes Development, the team saw an opportunity to transform the historic property originally designed as the Rootimentary space. “This historic building in the center of Laurens fits our concept perfectly,” said Sidney Perkins, the team’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve worked hard to create a space where Southern cooking and hospitality come together with a sophisticated, inviting atmosphere. It’s exciting to finally bring this to life.”
Southern Cuisine and Art Deco Vibes
The first level, Moultrie, will showcase traditional Southern comfort food elevated with refined culinary techniques and locally sourced ingredients. “We’re committed to partnering with local businesses, like Sanitary Market, for our steaks and other ingredients,” shared Sidney. “Supporting local farmers and suppliers is important to us as we build relationships in the community.” While the menu remains under wraps, the emphasis will be on creating a memorable dining experience that honors Southern roots.
On the lower level, The Fox Hole will transport guests to the roaring 1920s with its Art Deco-inspired design. The speakeasy lounge will offer expertly crafted whiskey cocktails and live jazz performances in a sleek, vintage ambiance. “We’re adding our own flair to the downstairs bar that was originally designed by the Holmes family,” Sidney said. “With live jazz and whiskey cocktails, The Fox Hole will offer an experience unlike anything else in Laurens. It’s going to be a place where guests can unwind and feel like they’ve stepped into another time.”
A Focus on Community
Both Matthew Perkins and Jeffrey Ponder, who grew up in Fountain Inn, bring a deep appreciation for Southern hospitality to the venture. From childhood lunches at local diners to a commitment to sourcing ingredients locally, their Upstate roots shine through in every detail. In addition to its culinary offerings, the new restaurant aims to contribute to Laurens’ downtown by hosting events, live music, and private gatherings.
They plan to hire around 20 local employees, focusing on creating a respectful and enjoyable workplace. “We’re passionate about making a positive impact in Laurens,” said Sidney. “From hosting events to collaborating with local businesses, we want to be part of what makes this downtown thrive. It’s about creating a place where people can come together and feel at home.”
The team also operates other successful establishments, including Hotto Noodle (a ramen shop) and Sub Par Sandwich Club (a sub shop) at City Market’s Food Hall at Bridgeway Station in Mauldin. Currently under construction is a two-story Hotto Noodle location on Main Street in Fountain Inn, set to open in early 2025. This new location will be a full-service restaurant featuring the Fountain Inn’s first rooftop bar.
Looking Ahead
With plans for a soft opening in March 2025 and an official opening in April, Moultrie and The Fox Hole are poised to become a vibrant addition to Laurens. Updates and announcements are expected in January 2025.
As Sidney summed up, “We’re grateful to the Holmes family for their partnership and to the Laurens community for their warm welcome. We’re thrilled to bring this vision to life and can’t wait to serve you all.”
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting venture that promises to combine the charm of Southern hospitality with the elegance of a bygone era.
