December 9, 2024Actors’ Theater of South Carolina is the recipient of an Education Grant from the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) to help the community rediscover its unique American Revolution history.
The $15,000 grant will allow creation of engaging, user-friendly website profiles on twelve heroes, with images and maps of their area of contribution in the American Revolution as well as three screenings of the award-winning docudramas produced by the non-profit company. Screenings of “All for Liberty,” “John Laurens’ War,” and “Echoes of Glory: Heroes from the American Revolution” will take place over 2025 and 2026 in three different counties.
Educators throughout South Carolina, and cultural visitors across the world will have access to the materials to enhance student understanding of South Carolina’s contribution to the war era. In honor of the 250th anniversary milestones of the Revolutionary era, SC250 awards grants to organizations in all of South Carolina’s 46 counties to support education and cultural tourism initiatives in every corner of the state.
“It is wonderful for our company of creators, writers, actors, designers, technicians and volunteers to be a part of this marvelous and exciting commemoration in our state,” said Chris Weatherhead-Felder, Project Director, and one of the creators of the films. Scholar and panel member for audience discussions, Alexia Jones Helsley, agreed. “We need to study the transformative nature of the American Revolution in order to be good stewards of our history and freedoms going forward.”
Chris Volf, Chair of SC250 Committee for Berkeley County added, “Students and adults alike, will profit from understanding the people and places of the Revolutionary Era. We must be engaged through inspiring movies and events to learn the importance of Berkeley County and South Carolina in winning of our independence.”
South Carolina had the second-most battles and skirmishes of any state in the Revolutionary era, but the state’s significant contributions to America’s independence are rarely recognized in the national conversation. SC250 was established to educate residents and visitors about South Carolina’s contributions during the American Revolution.
