The Credit One Charleston Open, North America’s largest women’s-only tennis tournament and the official clay season kickoff on the Hologic WTA Tour, has been named ‘WTA 500 Tournament of the Year’ for the third consecutive year. This prestigious recognition, awarded by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), is voted on by the players, who honor a tournament based on the excellence of its staff and organization, its passionate fans, and its broader commitment to the sport and its athletes. The Credit One Charleston Open was selected from among 18 WTA 500 tournaments worldwide, competing against events in Australia, Europe, China, and other international locations.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team for earning the distinction of Tournament of the Year three years in a row for the Credit One Charleston Open. This achievement is a true testament to the hard work, dedication and passion that everyone brings to our event,” said Bob Moran, President of Beemok Sports & Entertainment. “It’s not just about putting on a great tennis tournament – it’s about creating an unforgettable experience for the players, fans and the entire community. I couldn’t be more grateful for the Navarro family’s commitment to excellence, and I’m deeply honored to see our efforts recognized on this global stage.”
The Credit One Charleston Open will return for its 53rd edition next year, March 29 to April 6, 2025, which also marks the 25th year of the event in Charleston, having moved from Hilton Head Island in 2001. The tournament is held annually at Credit One Stadium on Daniel Island in Charleston, SC. The event has seen significant growth in recent years, due in part to the renovation and modernization of Credit One Stadium, an elevated fan experience and a consistently strong player field that delivers top-level competition. Current player commitments include two former champions Madison Keys and Belinda Bencic, World No. 7 and US Open finalist Jessica Pegula, World No. 8, US Open semifinalist and Charleston local Emma Navarro, World No. 12 and DC Open champion Paula Badosa.
The ‘Tournament of the Year’ awards are divided into three categories, reflecting the different levels of WTA tournaments. The top honors for 2024 are as follows:
WTA 1000: BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells)
WTA 500: Credit One Charleston Open (Charleston)
WTA 250: Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (Hong Kong)
“The Credit One Charleston Open should be exceptionally proud of staging an event that continually goes above and beyond to create an atmosphere and environment where players feel comfortable and able to perform at their best. They have earned a well-deserved reputation and set an aspirational standard,” said Portia Archer, CEO of the WTA.
