A Passion Turned Business
New South Candles began as a simple hobby, born out of a love for candle-making. However, in June 2024, its founder, Rachel Hughes, took a bold leap, leaving behind a corporate career to create something personal and fulfilling. “I wanted to write my own narrative,” she shares. “I love candles, and I wanted to create a space where people could find thoughtfully curated gifts while also building a sense of community.”
Tanning services were added as a practical supplement to the business. “Laurens didn’t have a tanning salon, and since I enjoy tanning myself, I saw it as an opportunity to provide something new for the community.”
From New Hampshire to the South
New South Candles’ name is a tribute to its Rachel’s journey—from New Hampshire to South Carolina. Relocating for a corporate position in Greenville, she soon realized that city life wasn’t the right fit for her or her beloved dog, Autumn. A search for a quieter, safer place led her to Laurens, where she found a welcoming community and a home that she loves. Speaking of love, she also met her husband after relocating to South Carolina.
Handcrafted Candles with a Purpose
While she enjoys making candles personally, Rachel opts not to sell her own creations in the shop due to liability concerns. Instead, she curates a selection of high-quality, artisan candles, allowing customers to experience and select their favorite scents in person.
Among her favorite scents? “Right now, it’s Cuban Cigar—sweet tobacco, smoky spices, and bright citrus notes. But that could change next week,” she laughs. “Amber Romance, Gardenia, and Cashmere Dreams are always contenders.”
Tanning Services in a Boutique Setting
In addition to its gift shop offerings, New South Candles provides a tanning boutique experience with two bronzing beds and a stand-up tanning bed. Unlike traditional tanning beds, bronzing beds use specialized UV light that penetrates deeper into the skin, delivering a longer-lasting tan with less risk of burning.
To make tanning even more accessible, the boutique offers 15% off tanning packages for those who tan before 2 PM, valid through 2025.

As she looks toward retirement in the coming years, she envisions keeping the boutique open as a way to stay involved and continue providing a warm, welcoming space for customers.
“I want people to feel a sense of well-being when they visit—like they’re stepping into a simpler time where they can browse, chat, and just enjoy the experience.”
