Six Local Heroes Recognized for Decades of Service in Laurens County

July 9, 2025
On July 8, 2025, at the Hickory Tavern Fire Department’s monthly meeting, State Representative Luke Rankin honored six extraordinary volunteer firefighters who have each served over two decades protecting their neighbors.
The honorees represent a combined total of over 168 years of service—an extraordinary testament to their dedication. They include:
  • Chief Lance Roper – 25 years
  • Assistant Chief Christopher Aylesworth – 26 years
  • Captain Steven Hudson – 31 years
  • Medical Officer Jean Swanson – 46 years
  • Medical Officer Ann Jenkins – 20 years
  • Firefighter Joseph Blackshire – 20 years
With each certificate of recognition, signed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Rankin not only honored individual achievement but also elevated the vital role that volunteer firefighters play in South Carolina’s emergency response system. His visit to the Hickory Tavern Fire Department is part of a broader initiative to personally visit volunteer stations across Laurens County, ensuring that these local heroes are given the appreciation they deserve.
As Chief Lance Roper stated, “The successes of the Hickory Tavern volunteer fire department are a direct reflection of the dedicated members who serve their community daily.”  That spirit of collective commitment is what keeps departments like Hickory Tavern’s thriving—and what keeps their neighbors safe.
Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of rural public safety. They respond to structure fires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, and countless moments of quiet crisis, often without pay and with limited resources. These volunteers leave their families at all hours, train rigorously, and carry a deep sense of duty that can’t be taught—only lived.
