Homes of Hope celebrates Grand Opening of Lakeview at Berea with Community Leaders and Over 120 Guests
July 28, 2025New development brings 40 affordable rental and homeownership opportunities to Greenville County
Homes of Hope welcomed more than 120 guests this morning to celebrate the grand opening of Lakeview at Berea, a new affordable housing development located at 8699 Whitehorse Road in the Berea area of Greenville County. The ribbon cutting event, held Thursday, July 24 at 9:00 AM, featured remarks from Homes of Hope President & CEO Don Oglesby and District 19 Councilman and Greenville County Council Chairman Benton Blount. The morning concluded with guided tours of three of the community’s newly completed homes.
Lakeview at Berea features a total of 40 single-family homes—22 for sale and 18 for rent—designed to meet the housing needs of working families, retirees, and individuals on fixed incomes through a combination of affordability, quality construction, and long-term stability.
“This project, this development, is the perfect example of what affordable housing in Greenville County should be,” said Councilman Benton Blount. “A mix between rental and homeownership, it really gives people a chance to get started on the right path. And I’m excited to have it be a part of District 19.”
Blount also noted the strong community response to the event, calling it “the largest crowd I’ve ever seen at an affordable housing event,” a testament to the demand for solutions and the trust Homes of Hope has built across the region.
Lakeview at Berea was developed in partnership with McGuinn Homes and includes homes ranging from approximately 1,200 to 1,400 square feet with 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom and 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom floor plans, available in both one- and two-story options. For-sale homes are priced from the mid-to-upper $200s, and the rental homes offer the same floor plans and square footage as the for-sale homes, serving households earning from 30% to 120% AMI.
Pam Bryant, Vice President and Lead Philanthropy & Community Impact Specialist at Wells Fargo, shared the following in support of the project:
“It is such an incredible privilege to be part of the celebration for Lakeview at Berea with Homes of Hope. This is an incredibly worthy initiative, and Wells Fargo is proud to come alongside Homes of Hope in this effort. We know that affordable housing is the key to generational wealth. There’s such a shortage of it, and to have a partner so committed to providing homes—whether for rent or for purchase—is amazing. Lakeview is one of many examples of how Homes of Hope is making dreams a reality for families.”
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Anderson, the first homebuyers for one of the Lakeview at Berea homes, also shared their experience:
“[We] recently moved to the Greenville area from St. Louis, and this was the only way we would have been able to buy a home—especially a brand-new one,” said Mr. Anderson. “We’re so happy to be a part of this project.”
This milestone project was made possible through the support of several key financial partners: CommunityWorks Carolina, South State Bank, South Carolina Community Loan Fund, Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, Wells Fargo, SC Department of Mental Health, Oobe Apparel Design Group, F. W. Symmes Foundation, and Grace Church.
